Project Name: Increasing Epidemic Disease Awareness of Middle and High School Students with an Educational Game Designed with the Help of Mathematical Modeling
2209 Project Team: Özlem Gürakar- Emine Çepnioglu- Ali Oğuzhan Akkoç- Fatma Nur Giral
Supervisor: Prof.Osman Raşit Işık
Project Summary: Pandemic is the general name given to the epidemic that spreads to very large areas in many countries in the world and shows its effect intensely. Covid-19, the new disease of our age, has been declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). Covid-19 has made it necessary to take serious measures due to its faster spread and transmission rate in a short time compared to viruses belonging to the coronavirus family. In order to prevent the disease and manage the process correctly, both individual and social measures can be effective when carried out together with the laws and regulations of the state. In this process, it is of great importance to raise awareness of individuals in the society on issues such as social / individual isolation and hygiene. Considering all of these factors, there is no research in the literature on increasing the awareness of children and young people in this process. The aim of this project is to increase Covid-19 awareness of middle and high school students with an educational game designed with the help of mathematical modeling. The sample of the research, which will be conducted using quantitative research method, will consist of 7th and 11th graders studying in the 2020-2021 academic year in Muğla province. The scales used in the research will be applied with the pretest-posttest method by forming voluntary experimental-control groups for each of the 7th and 11th grades. Students' responses to the scales will be analyzed using appropriate analysis methods with the help of SPSS. It is estimated that the findings obtained will increase the awareness of children in possible epidemic situations and serve the public health issue.

2242 Projects:

2242 Project Name: Competitive-Hunting Game Model and its Application for Environmental Education
2242 Project Team: Özlem Gürakar- Emine Çepnioglu- Ali Oğuzhan Akkoç
Supervisor: Assoc.Dr.Osman Raşit Işık
Project Summary: In this study, a competitive-hunting model game was created and applied to university students in order to improve students' attitudes towards nature and the environment they live in, which has a great importance in shaping our present and future. With this game, some of the factors that negatively affect the life of species in nature were introduced to the students, and the balance between species in nature and intra-species conflicts due to changing conditions were shown. It was tried to emphasize how people can change this balance knowingly or unknowingly. It was also aimed to develop multiple skills by using different strategies and mathematical operations in accordance with the game rules. The students were divided into two groups, experimental and control groups, and using the pretest-posttest technique, the measurement tool was administered to the experimental group before and after the game and to the control group twice at a certain time interval before playing the game. Whether there was a change in the students' attitudes towards the environment at the end of the game was determined using a measurement tool found in the literature and the SPSS program. A significant positive difference was observed in the attitudes towards the environment of the students who played the game.

Project Title: The Effect of Distance Education on Attitude Towards Mathematics Course A Mixed Method Research
Project Team: Fatma Sude Pektaş Muhammet Mustafa Bulut Minel İşin
Supervisor: Assoc.Dr.Muhammet Mustafa Alpaslan
Summary of the Project:  Due to the Covid-19 virus outbreak in our country, distance education has been started in all schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education for the 2019-2020 Spring semester as of March 23, 2020. In distance education, lessons are given from home through the EBA platform.  In the literature, attitude towards mathematics course is defined as follows: Attitude towards mathematics refers to the total measure of liking or disliking mathematics, the tendency to engage in or avoid activities related to mathematics, and the belief that mathematics is useful or useless (Akgün, 2002). The aim of this study is to measure students' attitudes towards distance education (EBA) in mathematics courses during the Covid-19 process and to produce possible solutions for improving attitudes. The sample of the research, which was conducted with a convergent approach in which both quantitative and qualitative research types were used together, will be selected as one successful, one unsuccessful, and one moderately successful 7th grade 30 students who completed their 7th grade with distance education in Muğla province in 2019-2020. The mathematics attitude scale developed by Tolga Kabaca (2006) will be used to measure students' attitudes towards mathematics course. The aim of the study is to measure students' attitudes towards distance education (EBA) in mathematics course during the Covid-19 process and to produce possible solutions for attitude development. With the transition to distance education due to Covid-19, interview questions prepared by the researchers will be used to determine the situations encountered in this process in which students carry out the mathematics course over EBA. Students' responses to the interview questions will be analyzed according to the descriptive content analysis technique. After the reliability and validity analyses, SPSS program will be used to perform item-based factor analysis on the scale data obtained from the 26-item questionnaire. It is expected that the findings obtained will provide important solutions to the situations encountered in mathematics learning when switching from face-to-face education to distance education.

Project Summary: To control the environmental factors on germination, the effect of tobacco smoke harmful to human health and the pH of the water, temperature, light intensity, humidity, tobacco smoke, which can be measured in the environment depending on the interior and exterior shading colors in the greenhouses, with the help of Nova5000 and Arduino gas sensor, and to make exponential and logistic modeling of the height growth values of dicot and monocot plants grown in this environment and to make interpretations based on these models.

Project Title: Investigating the Relationship between Classroom Factors and Students' Sense of Achievement in Sixth Grade Mathematics Course
Project Team: Fatih Başkurt Vesile Yılmaz Elif Ilgın
Supervisor: Assoc.Dr.Muhammet Mustafa Alpaslan
Project Summary: This research aims to examine the relationship between classroom factors and students' feelings of achievement in mathematics course of sixth grade students. The research group was determined as sixth grade students at the middle school level. There are 24 middle schools in Menteşe district of Muğla. According to the LGS exam results, a total of six schools will be selected, two high, two middle and two low schools. Many classroom factors can be effective in students' learning and feelings of achievement. In this study, certain topics were included in the scope of the research by reviewing the literature. Data will be collected with the Achievement Emotion Scale (AES) and the 5-point Likert-type classroom life scale adapted by Ghaith (2002), which consists of 38 items and 6 sub-dimensions. Relational survey model will be used in the study. The reliability of the data will be determined by Cronbach's Alpha. Descriptive statistical and Pearson Correlation analysis techniques will be used for data analysis. The results of the analysis are predicted to show that classroom factors are related to students' feelings of achievement.

Project Name: Investigation of Pre-service Science Teachers' Readiness Levels about Mathematical Modeling
Project Team: Ayşe Tuğba Çakan
Supervisor: Assoc.Dr.Muhammet Mustafa Alpaslan
Project Summary: Mathematics is a branch of science that was born out of the need to produce solutions to people's daily problems in ancient times and formed the basis for other branches of science over time. Mathematics is not just abstract symbols and relationships consisting of formulas and equations. It is also a language that we constantly use to express and solve our daily needs (Struik, 2002; Yıldırım, 2011).Mathematical modeling is defined as the process of mathematically expressing the relationships between situations that are directly related or not directly related to mathematics and creating mathematical patterns within these situations, and it is very effective in raising individuals who can produce solutions to the problems they encounter by thinking creatively by providing interdisciplinary associations and who can use what they learn in daily life. By using mathematical modeling in teacher education, it contributes to future teachers to get to know interdisciplinary work closely and to understand the methods they will use in their lessons. In this study, in which we aimed to determine the readiness levels of pre-service science teachers about mathematical modeling, a convergent mixed model was used. The participants of the study were 1st and 4th year science teaching students of Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University, Aydın Adnan Menderes University. A semi-structured interview form consisting of open-ended questions and multiple-choice questions was prepared as a measurement tool. Descriptive analysis method will be used for semi-structured interview forms and quantitative descriptive analysis (2,1,0) for multiple-choice questions. Thanks to the findings obtained, it is estimated that pre-service teachers will have information about their thoughts about mathematical modeling, their ability to provide interdisciplinary relations and their level of using mathematical modeling skills and will provide important solution suggestions for teacher education.
